Automotive Service Pro-Tech
Automotive Service Pro-Tech

Pro-Tech is unique because its emphasis is training students to repair all makes and models of automobiles on the road today rather than a single manufacturer. Guided by NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) standards, the curriculum provides hands-on learning experience, which allows each student to understand the basic theories of automotive technology. Simulation experiences are required to diagnose and repair vehicles which have been "bugged" with real-world problems.

In an industry-driven program such as this, the faculty recognize the importance of applying new skills as soon as possible, so after each 7 1/2-week training period during which students have been taught 1-2 areas of the automobile, they will then work in a sponsoring independent service facility for a 7 1/2-week paid internship. This cycle of learning and applying skills continues over the course of 2 years, culminating in the Associate in Applied Science Degree.

In addition to automotive course work, a group of general education courses is required. These general education courses are also unique, because they are designed to relate to technical fields and provide relevant training.

Pro-Tech prepares students for A.S.E. (Automotive Service Excellence) certification, and provides the new automotive technician with a secure and reliable economic future.

Unique Nature of Pro-Tech

The Pro-Tech program has partnered with industry leaders such as Snap-On Tools, O'Reilly's Auto Parts, Mac Tools, NAPA Auto Parts, Bumper to Bumper, Automotive Service Association, and AAA. Our partners support the needs of the program as well as provide an access point to the most up-to-date technology available for automotive service. This ensures our students are always working with the most recent tools and equipment.

Coursework

Students take courses in all eight A.S.E. areas of the automobile. An Advanced Automotive Diagnostics course is also part of the curriculum. In the classroom, students learn the theories that explain why and how the automobile's systems and components function and operate, covering such topics as Ohm's Law, circuit defects, DVOM usage, wiring diagrams, wire repair, and many more. Lab instruction allows students to apply all of their new skills by diagnosing and repairing electrical problems on many different vehicles.

Other lab time is spent learning the hands-on skills and the tools and equipment used for automotive service. For example, in Automotive Engines, students get a clear picture of what is going on inside of an engine by disassembling and reassembling it. This lab experience allows students to visualize possible problems when learning how to diagnose engine noise and performance concerns.

Due to the heavy demand for diagnostic skills, students are required to follow industry approved diagnostic procedures for the current area of study. The coursework includes information and hands-on practice of all of the diagnostic tests most commonly used in the industry.

Pledge of Excellence

In all Pro-Tech courses, safety comes first, and each student is tested several times throughout each semester to ensure the proper level of safety awareness is achieved.

The Pro-Tech program prepares entry-level automotive service technicians who understand the meaning of professionalism. Our experienced faculty instills a sense of pride into each student so that he/she develops a professional attitude that makes each individual a cut above the rest.
