Admission Requirements

The goal of OSU Institute of Technology is to provide students the opportunity to succeed and to ensure each is prepared academically at each step in their education. The Engineering Technologies Division programs of study are academically rigorous; however student success can be maximized with proper advisement and remediation when appropriate. The faculty of the division make every effort to ensure each student is equipped with the necessary pre-requisite academic and technical skills to enter the program and to move to the next sequence of courses.

Students that meet the entrance requirements of either the AAS a BT degrees are expected to meet with an academic advisor prior to enrolling. Due to the math and science rigor associated with the Engineering Technologies programs, students that are admitted to the division under provision 2.a are advised to meet with the academic advisors of the Engineering Technologies Division. During this advisement session, issues such as intervening time span between the last college math/science class and previous academic program of study can be evaluated to determine the most advantageous plan of study for the student.

Associate of Applied Science

While OSU Institute of Technology is an open-door institution, to be admitted to the Engineering Technologies Division to pursue an Associate in Applied Science in Engineering Technologies degree, the following steps are to be completed by the student

1. Complete the OSU Institute of Technology admission process (i.e., application for admission, FAFSA, housing, etc.)
2. Demonstrate appropriate academic preparedness level by one of the following methods:
a. Complete 24 College Credit hours prior to admission to OSU Institute of Technology or successfully remediate at another institution of higher education (Note: Cooperative or Alliance Agreement credit hours do not apply to the 24 hour rule), or
b. Score 19 or better on all ACT sub-scores, or
c. Achieve the following minimum scores on the COMPASS exam (administered by OSU Institute of Technology or approved off campus site):
Reading Comprehension - 71
Writing Skills - 70
Pre-Algebra - 46
Algebra - 68 or College Algebra - 42
Combined Reading and College Algebra - 113, or Reading and Algebra - 139 AND not deficient in either category (determines science score), and
d. Demonstrate an appropriate level of computer literacy
i. Achieve an 80% on the OPAC Assessment available in the OSU Institute of Technology Assessment Center (A list of competencies is available in the Engineering Technologies Division office, the Assessment Center and the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs), or
ii. Have documented certifications of competencies in basic Microsoft Windows and Office, or
iii. Have successfully completed a computer literacy type course that is documented on a verifiable transcript (either High School or College)

Students that do not have the appropriate ACT or COMPASS scores may be provisionally admitted to the division pending successful completion of fundamental coursework and must meet with a divisional advisor to determine an enrollment plan. Additionally, a student that has two or more curricular areas that require fundamental course work, or any student that requires fundamental work in Algebra, is required to take Fundamentals of Problem Solving, ETD 0113 in addition to their other fundamental course work. Students that do not meet the entry level computer literacy requirements are required to take Fundamental Computer Applications for Engineering Technologies, ETD 0103.

Bachelor of Technology

To be admitted to the Engineering Technologies Division to pursue a Bachelor of Technology in either Civil Engineering Technologies or Instrumentation Engineering Technology, the prospective student must:

1. Hold an Associate degree or higher that meets one of the following criteria:
a. Graduates with the AAS in Engineering Technologies - Electrical/Electronics specialty from OSU Institute of Technology have the option of articulating into the Bachelor of Technology in Instrumentation Engineering Technology degree. A specific sequence of courses is required to insure seamless transition from the AAS to BT degree, OR
b. Graduates from other associate degrees may be required to take bridge courses prior to entering the bachelor degree program.
2. Complete the OSU Institute of Technology admission process (ie. application for general admission and admission to the BT program, FAFSA, housing, etc.)
